I was surprised by the feedback I received on a Powerpoint slide for a new company training course in Digital Marketing for IHM that I helped develop. The title of the picture was “SEO SEM Difference” and was about the difference between working with organic search results, i.e. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and paid search results, i.e. Search Engine Marketing (SEM).
The feedback was that I should split the picture in two because everyone didn’t understand the difference and confused the two concepts. It was surprising to me, who is so inside this world and thinks it is obvious. This is what is called home blindness. Now let’s see if I manage to open the eyes to the fact that these are not obvious things to everyone and explain the differences better in this blog post…
What is SEO?

Optimization
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, or search engine optimization as we usually say in Swedish. It is thus an optimization that you do for each page on your website so that the search engines find your pages and index them, i.e. add the pages to their database.
Ranking
Your page will also be ranked or ranked as most people say, i.e. the page gets a position on the so-called search results page, or Search Engine Results Page (SERP) in English. There are hundreds of factors that affect the ranking or position a page gets on the SERP. Some of these factors you can influence and some of them you cannot influence. The text you use in the page’s Title link is an example of something you can influence. How long the page has existed is an example of something you cannot influence.

SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing and it is mainly an expression for when you advertise on Google. You simply pay for your page to be placed high on the SERP. You create your ads with Google Ads, formerly known as Google Adwords. The ads appear on Google’s search results page when someone searches for the search phrases or keywords that you assign to your various ads.
